The Credit Union Difference

At first glance, there may not seem to be much difference between credit unions and banks. They both offer similar products and services. However, credit unions differ from traditional banks in many ways.

What is a Credit Union?
A credit union is a cooperative, not-for-profit, financial institution, that is owned by its members to meet their financial needs. A credit union generally serves members who share a common bond, such as location/community, education, employment, or religion. Unlike most other financial institutions, credit unions donít issue stock or pay dividends to outside stockholders.

The government recognizes credit unions' unique mission. As such, credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions and are not assessed taxes. All earnings that a credit union makes goes back into the organization to benefit its members (the shareholders of the organization) in the form of highly competitive loan and savings rates and fewer fees.

About UCU
University Credit Union (UCU) is a not-for-profit financial institution for employees and families of major Southland Universities that was established in 1951 by UCLA employees, for UCLA employees. The credit union's field of membership has grown extensively over the years, as has its products, services, and capabilities.

Because the credit union is not-for-profit, it is able to offer its members higher deposit rates and lower lending rates than most banks. Because it is a smaller organization, the customer service is more personalized, giving members the feeling of a community bank. Click here to see if you are eligible to join.
