Beware of Identity Theft on the Rise: Texting & Email Scams
Identity thieves are keeping up — and often
staying ahead of the game — as technology
becomes an even bigger means of personal
and financial communication. Here are two
current scams:
SMiShing (cell phone fraud)
In Short Message Service phishing, the victim
receives a text message requesting immediate
action such as “Your ATM card is about to expire” or "Verification needed on your Account."
Never respond to the text! Instead, contact your
financial institution to verify its authenticity.
Phishing
Phishers send you a deceptive email, appearing
to come from a reputable company, with a “call to
action” to visit a website. Never click on these links
and always remain suspicious of unsolicited emails. Please be aware of these scams and contact University Credit Union at 310-477-6628 ext. 1, if you have any questions or concerns.

UCU's car loan options help if you have challenged credit
A less-than-perfect credit history or lower credit score can create roadblocks when trying to secure car financing. Whether you want to purchase a car or refinance the loan you've got, credit history and scores play a role in the loan review.
Some borrowers do not have an ideal credit situation. The reasons vary. Maybe they had a few late payments with creditors or lack of an extensive credit history. This can all translate to a lower credit score.
Loans That Fit Many Borrowers UCU has some options for members that want to purchase a car or refinance an existing high-rate car loan at a bank. We start by taking a look at your individual situation. Then we do our best to find an auto loan option that works for you. UCU offers loans to those with challenged credit* on new, used and refinanced autos.
Loan Officers Review Your Situation Approval will depend on a variety of factors and not everyone will get the lowest rate. But, the rate we offer may be better than what's offered by a dealer or what you secured on your current car loan. We may even be able to extend the loan term to lower your monthly payments. Everyone's situation is different, so your personal information is carefully considered.
Get started now! Our UCU representatives can try to connect you with the right car loan for your situation. Apply online or call 310-477-6628 ext. 1 for more information.
*Loans issued subject to credit review. The actual rate, length of repayment and amount financed you may receive is determined by a combination of factors, including credit qualifications, credit score, loan amount, collateral, down payment and terms. Rate maximum can be as high as 18.00% APR, depending on credit review. Loans available only to members residing in California, and for vehicles registered in California. Call for details.

Helpful Advice from "Psychology of Spending" workshop
In the recent "Psychology of Spending" workshop, hosted by University Credit Union and BALANCE, the presenter noted many ways in which consumers view spending and their spending habits.
Jennifer Wallis, Partner Relations Manager with the BALANCE Program, pointed out many tips that can help you analyze your spending so you can stick to your budget:
When you go shopping, make a list and stick to it. This will help you avoid impulse buying.
People spend more per transaction using a credit card, than when using cash or a debit card.
Do you get regular e-mails about sales at stores? Unsubscribe to resist the urge to shop.
If you're buying something that might be more expensive or extravagant, convert the price into the number of hours you had to work to pay for the item. Now is the item worth the cost?
Do you buy coffee or tea daily at a coffee shop? Add up those costs per month … is that a big portion of your budget that you can control? Consider making your own coffee at a fraction of the cost.
Don't like your office coffee? Spruce it up with a flavored non-dairy creamer. That may be better for your budget, instead of buying coffee each day.
Start automatic savings from your paycheck to UCU. Knowing you are putting money aside helps keep your spending habits in mind.
Budgeting and spending advise is available free to UCU members through the BALANCE program. Counselors can provide pointers, review your spending and even help you set up a budget. Services are confidential and meetings are held over the phone. Find out more about BALANCE and get contact information.
You might have money from an inactive account -- now being held by the State of California
By law on an annual basis, financial service entities send the State of California money from accounts with no activity or contact for at least three years. The State holds the funds until you ask for it. They call this unclaimed property.
Some people don't realize they have something: maybe money from an old savings account where you forgot to change an address, or a rebate or refund that was returned to sender.

As member-owned, not-for-profit financial institutions, credit unions have a unique mission of providing financial services to select community groups. Whether the groups are employer-based, educational, community or any other category, credit unions are there to assist their members.
The government recognizes credit unions' unique mission. Credit unions have volunteer supervisors (Board of Directors and Supervisory Committees) that help oversee the well-being of their members' deposits and credit unions only serve specified fields of membership. As such, credit unions are not-for-profit financial institution and are not assessed taxes. All earnings that credit unions make go back into the organization to benefit its members (the shareholders of the organization). As not-for-profits, credit unions can offer its members competitively priced services.
There is talk of removing credit unions' tax-exempt status. If this were to happen, it could dampen a credit union's earning capacity and the membership could see a change in how services are offered.
