UCU Announces 2017 Scholarship Winners

University Credit Union is excited to announce our 10th Annual Scholarship Program is accepting applications for the 2017 academic year. The UCU Scholarship Committee awarded three scholarships to deserving students for their hard work toward furthering their education at the 66th annual meeting held at the UCLA Faculty Center on March 22, 2017. Each student wrote an original essay on the topic of “What credit unions should do to make the ‘People Helping People’ philosophy relevant to students. UCU has given $56,500 in scholarships to date. The Committee awarded $7,500 in scholarships this year to the following high school, under graduate and graduate students:

Fariz – He is currently a High School student. He is still waiting for all of his acceptance letters and has not chosen his college yet. He wants to pursue a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He has several awards including winning first place in the My Hero Film Festival, a Biliteracy Award and Delphian’s Honor Society, and was awarded the President’s Volunteer Service award for more than 200 hours of community service.

Fariz believes that students should be taught essential financial skills, it would help young people navigate financial aid and student loans and it could help reduce default rates in the future.

Kaitlyn – Kaitlyn is a student at UCLA. She aims to become a doctor and to possibly participate in research involving women’s and children’s health. She has many awards including Outstanding Musician Awards, Math Awards, NHS, California Scholarship Federation, Christian Leadership & Servant Awards, and she was President of the Science Club at her high school. Kaitlyn’s essay centered on the idea that UCU should focus on introducing savings accounts to students, encouraging budgeting during college, and to “destigmatize the reality of being a broke college student!” She advocates for having student loan counselors on campus to help students with student loan debt. She says that most institutions expect students to be self-sufficient and responsible for themselves, but if they partner with the credit union, they don’t have to do it alone.

Kingjoe – Kingjoe is a UCLA graduate student in the process of earning his Masters. He holds a BS in Nursing and wants to earn a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). That way he can make a difference in the VA Healthcare System, as well as tackle the global health challenges in third world countries, especially Africa. Kingjoe has some impressive military experience. Kingjoe’s suggestion is the “People helping People” motto resonates specifically with student veterans, because they deeply understand what it means to serve. He says he has personally benefitted from the UCU Balance educational seminars that are put on monthly and he has been to many. He thinks by showcasing these workshops to student veterans it will help them to navigate the vast ocean of the financial world awaiting them upon graduation.
